These Slender Tailed Meerkats were in an open-topped enclosure which was perfect for photography, and I found myself visiting them several times because they were so photogenic ! They were taking turns on sentry duty – and their dead tree perch made a splendid platform for me to focus on. When they were on the ground they moved very quickly, whereas up here I had time to focus easily and work on creating the right depth of field. All shots bar one were taken with my EF70-200 2.8 zoom – which I switched to after lunch. I haven’t had the opportunity to use it much yet, and I found that it was fantastic to use hand held. I am very impressed with the ‘Bokeh’ on these images, and I have a very strong feeling that it is going to be well worth its hefty price tag.
These Meerkat photos are my favourites – although it was very hard to choose between them all. I found that whistling was a good idea – as the sentry was so alert he moved his head for lots of different poses….. Perhaps someone can choose their favourite one to put in my ‘Top 3’ photos of the day along with my Lioness and Orangutan shots …..?
